Read Today's God File
People see what they pay attention to. If a person’s
attention is fixated on the negative then all they will
see is the negative. The negative is real. It does exist.
But it is not all that exists.
If a person pays attention to the positive presence
of spirituality and spiritual events in the world –
even, or especially in the small dimension of our own
world – then that is what will be seen. The positive
is real. It does exist. A person shortchanges him or
her self if they do not pay attention to all the positive
events that fills their lives.
Keeping a God File is the discipline of writing down
on a regular basis where they have witnessed goodness
or love or spirituality or humanity at its best –
all of which some people sum up in the word “God.”
Keeping a God File is paying attention to and recognizing
this “God” in the nuts and bolts of everyday
life. In OUR everyday life. “God” is equally
present and active in and around and through our everyday
lives as in the lives of those we consider saints or
spiritual celebrities. We are in fact called to be spiritual
celebrities in the small patch of the world we call
home. All that is often lacking is paying attention
to the spiritual energy that surrounds us each and every
day.

Earnie's God File:
Thirteen is a tough time for boys
It’s as if an evil giant laid hands to their world and turned it upside down. Nothing is as it was. What will be suffers still in unborn birth pangs. It is a time for hiding, for finding protection from the unseen enemy while periodically all manner of hurt and rebellion bursts forth in behavior that baffles them as much as everyone else. Exasperated loved ones ask, “Why did you do that?” They don’t know. It somehow just happened while they weren’t looking.
Laughter is hard to find during this time. Laughter leaves the moment unguarded. Unguarded is to be avoided at all costs. But last week I heard Monte actually belly laugh at some nonsense we were perpetrating while we rode along. Then the moment extended itself and he laughed again, hard, before the rock of feigned isolation once again covered his beautiful face. I’m sure the angels rejoiced. It was the most beautiful sound I had heard in a long, long time.
Hang in there, Monte. This phase will pass. I remember it well. The sun will shine again and you will once more understand the shape and rules of the world you live in. Until that blessed time, just hang in there.

Long years of drug use ruined your teeth. Six years ago you received the gift of recovery. Your ruined teeth however remained like grave markers of the death that once ruled your life. Your life now shines but your teeth don’t. That is until today.
Today I saw your new, polished, beautiful teeth. Now those teeth stand as markers of where the life of Christ was born again into our human condition. Once there was dark. Now there is light.
Some brought silver and gold to the manger. A shepherd boy played his drum. And you brought your newfound love of yourself in the form of lovely, white teeth. And the baby smiled.
