Inner Child

If a person feels stuck in his or her efforts at recovery or simply moving to a deeper level of spirituality chances are the reason is because necessary inner child work has been avoided. Perhaps avoided because that person didn’t know there was such a thing as inner child work. Or didn’t understand that they needed to do the work.

The term “Inner Child” means some part of our natural development was fixated in childhood. That fixation is always the result of painful experiences or downright abuse. It has been pointed out that there are three parts to every person: the part that advanced into healthy adulthood, the part that remained rooted in childhood and the part that came into being to protect that “child” rooted in the adult. The “protector” is the techniques a person learned to survive through the painful times of the fixation.

That third part, the “protector” may well have saved the person's life when the person was in the vulnerable position of the child. It was the best friend that person had. But once that person passes to adulthood that “friend” becomes an obstacle to change and growth. That is because the place of the “fixation” is always around intimacy, trust and loving relationships.

As an adult, if the protector is not retired, those same techniques will make impossible healthy relationships. The soul will starve. “Then” will forever be “now.”
